But one thing lead to another, and I started flash-backing to my childhood.

But seriously it was what it was and it was the best.

Being born in 1951, the '50s were my childhood years. And you couldn't do better than that.

Technically, I wasn't born in Palm Springs, but my parents returned there when I was 2 months old, so for the next 25 years, that's all I knew. We moved into my childhood home when I was 2 years old (all 3 of my sisters were born while we lived there) and my 89-years old mom lives there yet. We got a big lot (sand was cheap) and my Dad was in the construction biz, so eventually we had a big house.

But the summers I remember (125 F, mind you) consisted of my mom kicking us outside (her reading time, mind you). Us 4 girls? in our panties. Why wear more? We roamed our backyard, blonde hair, blue eyes, and brown as berries every one. I invented fantastical plots (being the oldest) and we buried treasure, built castles in the mud under the cottonwood tree, climbed up the tree to escape the witch, and generally rampaged all over the backyard until Mom let us back in.

At which, of course, it was time to settle down with the latest treasure from the library and dream some more.

Do children have lives like this anymore? And what a loss that is.

Uh oh, I discovered a big patch of poison ivy behind the front bushes. I hate to attack plants, but I bought a spray-bottle of weed killer and sprayed every leaf I could see. (Some of it is winding its way up the inside of a fat bush which may, sadly, become a casualty of the spraying.) Shiremom, Shiredad, and I are VERY allergic to poison ivy. We'll see how things look out there over the next week.

Shiremom and I both really enjoyed "August Rush". Thank you to everyone who recommended it!

In happy-happy news, I sat myself down yesterday, refused to be distracted, and wrote chapter 4 of my fluffy Cormallen story. Hooray! Now it just needs some polishing.

Pippin's been extra alert today, listening to the high winds whip the trees around, but it finally seems to be nap time. zzzzzzzzzzzz

Los Angeles has this awesome thing that happens every couple of years or so where all the museums, galleries, random cultural things, etc. focus on a central theme. It's called Pacific Standard Time. A couple of years ago, it was Mid-Century California Design, and it was awesome.

This time, it is Latin-American and Latino Art. If you want to check it out, here ya go. http://www.pacificstandardtime.org/

We've seen a couple so far, and Saturday we went to the Annenberg Center for Photography in Century City, which had a Cuba Is. . . exhibit, but what is even better, a short video covering those photographers and their motivations/journeys. In case you are interested, here you are. https://www.annenbergphotospace.org/

And then this afternoon, we hustled downtown to watch the LA Opera do Carmen. As you do. Gotta vote that opera as the one with the best songs and most awesome plot ever. Yeah, Aida, bring on your elephants, but girl buried in tomb vs girl stabbed by her ex-lover because she is just too damn sexy? No contest.

The Withered Arm and Other Stories, Thomas Hardy

So back when I was a teen, Hardy was totally my jam. Tragic heroines, rural English countryside, what was not to love?

And now, however, I notice that Hardy is the patron saint of Make one small miscalculation, and your life is straight down the tubes, girl. (Heads up, guys, not so much for you.)

Hmmm.

I recently got an inexpensive computer microphone to do audio crowdwork jobs with, and I've used it to cobble together a short documentary about how I typically make my images!  I marked it unlisted so it won't show up on YouTube searches, but I've embedded it below.  I hope it's not too boring!  :D

While searching for free background music for my video, I encountered an awesome site called Bensound.com.  This person has posted loads of first-rate original music under a Creative Commons - Attribution type of license.  Check this out if you need some excellent free music!  :)

It was 105 degrees F (41 C). Today? 53 degrees F (12 C) and breezy as all get out. All of us are walking around like, Yeaaaaah. :)

Weather be bi-polar, but we'll take this for sure.

Today was Math Collaboration Day at my school, which is a cool thing. It's a chance for the entire Math Dept. to call in subs, get together on our own, and plan out stuff, resolve issues, and just do math.

I'm on several district committees and such like, and it always tickles me when they pass out some activities we can have our kids work on. And all the teachers are like whatevers, gimme the math. Which we promptly attack, happy as clams.

Not quite the same reaction we get from our students when we pass it out to them, alas.
